Manhattan
I was back in New York for work and had a day, just before we started the job, to get out and walk around the city. If you can imagine, I did Manhattan that day without the noise. I quickly got jealous of all the fancy New Yorkers, walking around with their fancy wireless Apple earbuds and before you know it, I found some for myself and quickly drowned out the city noises with some loud music. It was different to say the least. Walking around the speeding cars, the endless amount of people and the ambient blare coming from the center of town – I could hearn none of it. It was me, Radiohead and two new cameras, ready for some daydreaming. Tell me something that sounds better than that?!
18.8 miles later, I had enough. I walked from Battery Park to Central Park and all over. I was quickly tiring and headed towards the subway. Remember those fancy earbuds I just had to have? Right when I hit the subway platform, I reached up to stretch and kicked one of those earbuds out of my ear. Click …. clack .. and yeah, all the way to the bottom of the subway tracks. If you’ve never tried to get attention in the sub-way, strap two camera bodies to yourself, everyone is always looking at you, and they were. Two men approached me as I stared down onto the tracks and said, we watched the whole thing, you’ve got 6 minutes to make it happen. I said “what?” The man looked at me and said, we will help get you out, jump down and get it! I thought about it for a second … and it was only that, just one second, cause in less than three seconds I found myself down on the subway tracks, looking for my dumb earbud! Huge rats scurried away and the subway became alive with concern as hundreds of people watched me scurry around the tracks of the subway. I found the dumb earbud and quickly reached up to find the helping hands of the strangers that inspired my choice. I still have the earbud, both cameras and a cool story 🙂
It will be a while until I am back in the city. I learn a little more about that concrete jungle everytime I scurry around, photographing what interests me as I walk with my music.
